The Modern Wedding Cake: Cupcakes and Cake Pops Oh My!

Cake Pops | By- niner bakesIn Part 3 of our special blog series on wedding cakes, we’ll talk about the modern trends and latest fads in the wedding cake world. If you missed our Part 2 post on wedding cake flavors, check it out here.

Now that we’ve gone over designing a wedding cake and choosing flavors, it’s time to really think outside the box. While many couples choose to have a wedding cake with a few tiers, some couples are opting to forgo the traditional cake structure. The modern wedding cake now includes elaborate cupcake towers, bite-size cake pops, or combinations of cake and cupcakes. These new desserts are easy to serve, and guests won’t have to wait for a large cake to be sliced and handed out. Here’s how to incorporate these trendy and tasty designs into your wedding dessert.

Cupcake Wedding Cake

This modern take on the wedding cake looks and tastes as good as it sounds. Because cupcakes are quick and easy to bake, they’re a great way to ensure that your dessert is fresh and flavorful. Bakeries can whip up a batch of cupcakes shortly before your wedding and design them just like a regular cake. Talk with your wedding bakery about choosing flavors for the cake and frosting, and see what type of designs they can create for your wedding cupcakes. It may also be possible to choose a few different cupcake flavors and frosting combinations since your baker will probably be making quite a few batches of the tasty treats.

Once you’ve settled on flavor and design, think about how you can display the cupcakes. One option is to mimic the look of a traditional cake structure by setting up cupcakes on stands with a pole running down the middle for support. Decide on how many tiers you’ll need (easy to calculate-roughly 1 cupcake per guest, plus a few extras) and make sure your baker uses a sturdy material that can hold the weight of all the cupcakes. Another idea is to use the cupcakes to line the border of a regular cake. Here’s where different size cupcakes with various colors can create a beautiful effect that will really impress your guests.

Cake Pops

These little treats are another trend in the cake world that modern couples are incorporating into their weddings. Cake pops are like dessert lollipops, and who doesn’t like lollipops? They’re easy to serve and don’t require much effort to make. Like cupcakes, cake pops can replace the traditional structure of a cake or be used as decorations on a regular cake. If you want a simple but pleasing wedding dessert, cake pops will satisfy your guests’ sweet tooth without making them feel like they’ve overindulged on dessert.

Remember that using cupcakes or cake pops can also help you save money! Many establishments charge a price for cutting a wedding cake if it has been made out of house. Consider using the modern wedding cake trends discussed here if you’re looking to cut down on costs. For inspiration on how to do so, here are some ideas on making cupcakes or cake pops work for your wedding.

The Modern Wedding Cake: Taste and Flavor

Wedding Cake Flavor | By- roboppyIn Part 2 of our special blog series on wedding cakes, we’ll talk about your wedding cake flavor and other tasty details. If you missed Part 1 on modern wedding cake design and decoration, check it out here!

Hopefully, our last blog on wedding cake design got you thinking about what you want your wedding cake to look like. Now it time to think about the inside! As guests admire the beautiful design of your cake, they’ll also be thinking about taste; wondering what flavor of frosting is between the layers or whether those gorgeous flowers are edible. You can satisfy your guests’ sweet tooth by choosing a cake that’s as delicious as it is beautiful.

Don’t Flake on Flavor

Wedding cakes have gotten the reputation of being beautiful on the outside but lacking flavor on the inside. Make sure your cake lives up to guests’ expectations by choosing a delicious flavor for your cake. Most bakeries are able to create wedding cakes in a variety of flavors, such as German chocolate, red velvet, or lemon. If you can’t decide on just one flavor, see if your baker can make the different tiers of the cake in different flavors (this option may have additional costs). Taste testing is a must, and you may have to visit a few bakeries before you and your partner decide on a bakery that can provide a flavorful, moist cake. It can be helpful to ask your friends or look at online reviews to find a good wedding cake bakery.

Finger-Licking Frosting

Since most wedding cakes are made of at least a few tiers, providing enough pieces for every guest, you’ll need to decide on all frostings or creams that will compliment the cake. Again, the bakery you decide upon will probably have a list of the flavors they can provide.

Some popular frosting and cream flavors include raspberry, Bavarian crème, and chocolate buttercream. Think about how the flavors of the cake and frosting will taste together. If you’re unsure of what you’re guests would enjoy, vanilla or chocolate is always a good base to start with. Once you decide on the flavors, consider personalizing your wedding cake frosting by making it a certain color or adding in your favorite candy like chocolate chips.

Wedding cakes should be as pleasing to eat as they are to look at, so take the time to choose the cake and frosting flavors that appeal to you. Make sure that cutting the cake is truly a sweet moment!

Up next, on Part 3 of our special wedding cake blog series, we’ll discuss some of the modern trends and updates to wedding cakes! Check back in with us soon to learn more.

The Modern Wedding Cake: Designs and Decorations

In addition to the new couple, the wedding cake is often the other star of a wedding reception. As the cake sits on its stand waiting to be cut, guests walk by admiring details of the edible flowers or the patterns stenciled on the tiers. Deciding on these details when designing a wedding cake can be a fun and creative process. As you plan your reception, try using some of these ideas to create a unique and modern wedding cake.

Choosing a Design

The traditional wedding cake typically has a few tiers covered in white fondant with some flowers. Although this design may fit the style of some couples, don’t let the traditional image of a wedding cake limit your creativity and personal style. Think of your wedding cake as a blank canvas- it can be kept simple and minimalist or decorated with different colors and designs. Consider whether you want your wedding cake to fit in with any color themes you have (such as with tablecloths, flowers, etc.) or whether your cake will have its own design. Coordinating with the bakery making your cake can help you with these decisions of the design process. Wedding cake bakeries usually have a portfolio of previously designed cakes that can provide inspiration for your own cake. Use your bakery as a resource, and find more inspiration from online sites like Pinterest or from your favorite artwork.

Deciding on the basic details like color and shape are the first step. The typical shape of a wedding cake involves circular tiers, but bakeries are also able to make cakes that are square and tilted. For a really unique cake, see if your baker can create a wedding cake in a shape representing a favorite hobby, such as a guitar. Once the shape has been decided, think about any patterns or stenciling you may want on your cake. Here is a beautiful example of a cake with the pattern of stained-glass windows.

 Deciding on Decorations

Flowers, polka dots, seashells, bows- wedding cakes can have it all. As you add accessories to your cake, keep a few things in mind. Many cake decorations are edible- bakers can make roses out of fondant and create pearls out of icing. Think about whether you want your entire wedding cake to be edible or have some accessories that your guests will need to remove before eating. Also think about the size and placement of the decorations- do you want flowers flowing down the sides of the cake or a few large flowers on the bottom tier? Communicating with your baker can help with these decisions as you create a modern and personalized wedding cake.

Next up on our special wedding cake blog series is all about the taste! Check back in to learn about deciding on cake and icing flavors.

A Cool Wedding Registry Can Turn Pinterest Dreams Into Reality

Cool wedding registry using pinterestBy now, we’re all familiar with the likes of the incredibly addictive Pinterest. If you’ve ever planned, been part of, or dreamed about a wedding, you’ve probably got a board going called “Happily Ever After”, or something equally charming. If you don’t, do it! Pinterest is a fabulous resource for brides-to-be and every procrastinator’s dream.

Dream It, Pin It, Get It

Don’t worry, we’re not about to suggest that you and Prince Charming spend the better half of year one pinning out your marriage anxiety, however, if you can make a Pinterest board full of inspiration for your special day, why can’t you do the same thing for your first year as Mr. and Mrs.? Furthermore, why can’t you make life a little easier on all of your loved ones and guide them through the gift-giving process by transferring the contents of your “Married Life” Board into the new registry you’ve set up with Wed&Wish? This way, instead of spending five Saturdays in a row at Sears returning the blenders, toasters and tableware, you’ll be enjoying tennis lessons, wine tastings, and romantic dinners at all the restaurants you’ve been dying to try out!

Extend Your Wedding Bliss

The best wedding gift registries are the ones that are tailored to the bride and groom. After spending all that time planning for one, big day, you deserve to ride the honeymoon wave for a lot longer than 7 days in the Caribbean. So, do yourselves a favor and take some time together to cross-reference your respective bucket lists, and you’ll be left with very cool wedding registry ideas.

How to Convert a Pinboard to Wedding Gifts

Taking a pin-board of great ideas is easier than you think to transform into amazing gifts. Simply estimate the amount of guests you think will attend and multiply that number by the average gift amount you think they will spend to get your total amount. Then take a look at your pin-board and make some decisions as to which events, gifts or experiences would be fun for all to post about and share. Pick enough gifts to approximately equal that amount you came to in the example above or choose one large gift of the same amount to split up into gift amounts. It’s that easy and registration is free on most registries so try one out today!

The Online Honeymoon Registry Guide to Preventing Honeymoon Hang-ups

honeymoon hangups by Bunches & Bits KarinaThe cake’s been cut, your Maid of Honor is recovering from the aggressive bouquet-toss-scramble and you’re pretty sure your dress has soaked up about as much champagne as your uncle Frank; congratulations, you survived your wedding! So now it’s time to kick off the satin sandals and head to the beach with your new love…well, almost.

Before you drop the dog off with the new in-laws (thanks, “mom & dad!”) or update any one of the ten social media profiles, lets go over a few potential buzz-killers that could really throw a wrench into the mix.

If you’ve planned and survived your own wedding, chances are you can probably handle the contents of your purse, so we’re considering issues of a far more potent nature here in this online honeymoon registry guide; the kinds of things that a margarita and aloe-gel will not be able to fix.

Honeymoon Hang-up #1 – Location

Number one on the list of honeymoon hang-ups: Location, location, location! Yes, we’d all like to visit the island where they filmed The Beach, ideally with Leonardo DiCaprio as a tour guide, but like all too-good-to-be-true locations, the pitfalls will soon outweigh the glamour. Go for locations that have the amenities you need to be comfortable. Pay especially close attention to the bathroom facilities. Don’t like the idea of a “shared” shower? Better check first! We have seen everything from rationed toilet paper to bathrooms so small the toilet was in the shower, so don’t take anything for granted.

Electrical outlets can become an issue as well. What kind of power does your destination use? Do you have the extension or converter that fits? Will there even be a working outlet? Think ahead and pay close attention to reviews.

Deals and Deal-breakers

Second on the list of honeymoon hang-ups: Deals of any kind. Nobody is saying that you shouldn’t be frugal, but for the love of Tom Brady, signing yourself up for an 18-hour layover that breaks up a 6-hour flight makes about as much sense as putting a pair of gloves over a set of freshly painted nails- yes, even when it saves you $100.

You can’t put a price on sanity, but if you could it would be far greater than $100. Besides, when your beach days are limited you’ve got to make them count! Trust us when we say that, after about 6 hours in any airport, you’ll start dipping into the money you “saved” on the flight tickets for things like beer, magazines, massages, and Starbucks- all of which you can get at the mall when you come back from vacation.

Love those Logistics.

Let’s play a game:

The clerk says… “Your last name please, Mam?”

You… proudly state your married name.

The clerk answers… “I’m sorry Mam, we can’t seem to find your reservation.”

You… freak out.

Game over.

It may seem like a no-brainer, but this rookie move is actually quite common and quite lethal to romantic moods all over the world! Please don’t confuse this for a passport check. Of course you’ve already put both passports in your carry-on bag, next to your new copy Nicholas Sparks novel. This is a “your passport isn’t going to do you much good if the name on it doesn’t match the one on your hotel reservation or your flight reservation or the rental car reservation; you get the point.

Remember these three lessons, have fun, be safe and don’t forget sunscreen! ;)

Ultimate Guide to Wedding Dresses For Pregnant and Expecting Brides

Pregnant Brides - Photo By - Adrian Dreßler

While the social awkwardness of being a pregnant bride is dampened in 2013, finding a dress that will fit, instead of does fit, is an awkward experience of its own. How are you supposed to know how much weight you will gain? While some women stay thin with a big baby bump, others blossom from head to toe.

Learning About The Empire Waist Dress

As a preggo bride your best, and safest bet, is to choose an empire waist dress. Here’s a link to a curated list of empire wedding dresses to get you acquainted with your new best friend. The empire waist is designed to flatter any woman that has a wider middle section, raising the waistline high above the actual waist and sometimes right up under the breasts. This has the effect of flattering the breasts and lengthening the body.

Estimating Your Dress Size in Advance

Number one tip is to look at your mother and grandmother. How many sizes did they increase? Is your diet similar? Most expecting mothers will gain 2 – 4 sizes during pregnancy and a few will gain more than 4. The most important thing to pay attention to when considering an empire waist dress is not the size of you from the waist down, but from the breasts up! If you tend to gain a lot of weight in your arms, face and breasts when you put on pounds, you will need to choose a dress that has “room to grow” with you.

If you want a complete tailored look, the better option is to pick the style of dress you want and wait till one month before the wedding to purchase the dress. Then schedule a fitting 1 week before your wedding and have the tailor sew it a little wide (in-case you have swelling in the arms or breasts). It is easier to pin in day-of than alter to make more room.

Picking The Right Length

Length is a style preference but it can also be helpful to consider the season you are getting married in and the look you want to achieve. Short empire waist dresses can look ultra-cute with billowing layers of ruffles and pleats while silky-smooth, longer dresses ,played up with a bit of with embroidery, can look positively regal.

Either way you choose, remember that you will want to be comfortable most of all so pick pair of shoes that will go the distance with you. For more inspiration check out this Google Images page for preggo wedding dresses.

Wedding Inspiration: Hot Trends for Spring 2013

Wedding Inspiration | Photo by- Francesca PalazziWith wedding season just around corner, the latest spring wedding trends offer inspiration for every couple. This season the focus on customization continues to gain popularity as more couples look to put a unique spin on their ceremony and reception. As you create the wedding of your dreams, here’s three spring trends to help you personalize the details:

The New Venue

Couples are thinking outside the box when it comes to the location of their ceremony and party. For your wedding, consider booking a space that comes with its own beauty, like a favorite art gallery or museum. If you plan to have an outdoor wedding, think about using a family farm or childhood summer camp where you can play up the natural beauty and surroundings. Your choice of a unique venue location can show off personal style or tell about the special attachment you and your partner have to a space.

Have Fun with Food

Think whimsical and fun when planning the menu, especially for desserts and snacks. Many couples are now offering their favorite sweets like s’mores or a bar with different candies that make for fun, DIY food. Make this trend your own with a selection of your favorite sweet treats (for some delicious inspiration, look through these Foodgawker wedding food photos).

On the savory side, gourmet food trucks are another popular trend that can show off personal flavor. Bring in a late night truck for tacos or BBQ to keep guests full and the party going. And if you want to personalize a sit-down dinner menu, think back to childhood meals or the dishes eaten on a first date and let those memories inspire your food choices.

The Wedding Game

Great music and space to dance are still classic elements for having a fun reception but the new trend for wedding entertainment is all about the games. Bocce ball, croquet, and corn hole let your guests team up and have some wedding competition. These games are perfect for outdoor venues with plenty of space, and indoor receptions can work well with a small arcade or area for card games. If you want to personalize the games, try custom designing the game pieces with your initials or the wedding date.

Staying true to your personal taste never goes out of style, so always make any trend your own by customizing it the way you like best!
